The four, 16-week semesters in the Day Program provide the nursing student with a weekday schedule for attending lecture, lab and clinical assignments.

The Day Program is a 3-4 day per week commitment, which entails a weekly 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. weekday clinical requirement.

The program starts annually in late August (Fall semester).  Application deadline is March 29, 2013.

REQUIREMENTS

For consideration as a student, the applicant must submit:

• proof of graduation from an accredited high school or high school equivalency (GED);
• proof of successful completion (C or better) of one year high school Chemistry or one semester college Chemistry (non-remedial, 4 credits);
• submission of official transcripts from all post secondary (colleges) and schools of nursing attended;
• personal integrity and potential for nursing as documented by one reference from a guidance counselor, teacher, employer or member of the clergy, and
• proof of U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency (a.k.a. Green Card) 
• Applicants educated in a foreign country will need to have their high school and college international transcripts validated by a recognized agency such as the World Education Services. 
• Students who possess a Bachelor’s Degree may have their high school transcript waived.  Contact the Admission-Recruiter for further details.

IT IS ADVISABLE THAT AS MANY LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES COURSES AS POSSIBLE ARE COMPLETED PRIOR TO ENTRY TO REDUCE WORKLOAD. 

*Some students may have to complete liberal arts and sciences requirements during the summer.

INELIGLIBILITY TO APPLY

1. Persons who have been dismissed for academic or disciplinary cause from the Dorothea Hopfer School of Nursing or another RN program.  
2. Persons who attended a prior nursing program and received a grade less than C+ in a nursing course.

ENTRANCE EXAM

The scores on the Entrance Exam are one of the primary factors in determining admission. Upon receipt of all admissions requirements, if required coursework is evident and GPA is 2.70 or higher an invitation will sent for the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Version V.  It is strongly recommended that applicants prepare for the TEAS Version V by ordering the TEAS Version V Study Manual from Assessment Technologies, Inc. (ATI)  http://www.atitesting.com/ati_store/TEAS-Products.aspx  Practice exams are also available on the ATI website.    In addition, Westchester Community College Mount Vernon Extension Site offers Preparation Classes for the Nursing Entrance Exam, for more information call 914-606-7200.

TRANSFER CREDIT POLICY

1. Submission of official transcripts from all post secondary (colleges) institutions and schools of nursing attended.
2. Submission of official High School transcript or high school equivalency (GED) report with scores and diploma. Applicants who possess a Bachelor’s Degree will have their high school transcript waived.
3. A cumulative GPA of 2.7 or better (DHSON will internally calculate the GPA) is required based on the completed courses required for the nursing program.  GPA will be recalculated prior to enrollment.
4. A minimum grade of C+ in all courses.

Sciences (Anatomy & Physiology I, Anatomy & Physiology II,  Microbiology and Nutrition) must be taken within 10 years of admission. Anatomy & Physiology I & II and Microbiology taken more than ten years ago may be challenged by examination with Excelsior College http://www.excelsior.edu/  Students must have passed the course with a grade of C+ or better to be eligible to take a challenge exam. Inability to achieve a satisfactory grade (B or better) on the first attempt to challenge will require the student to enroll in the course.

Liberal Arts courses (English Composition I, English Composition II, Developmental Psychology Lifespan, General Psychology and Introduction to Sociology) must be taken within 20 years of admission. Courses taken more than 20 years ago may be challenged by examination (CLEP) http://www.collegeboard.com/.  Students must have passed the course with a grade of C+ or better to be eligible to take a challenge exam.  A passing grade of 50 or higher to receive credit on a CLEP exam is required (75 or higher on the College Composiition exam to receive credit for English Composition II)   Inability to achieve a satisfactory grade on the first attempt to challenge will require the student to enroll in the course. Exception would be those applicants with a Baccalaureate degree.

CREDITS BY EXAMINATION

Hopfer will accept up to 9 credits earned through individual selected challenge examinations offered by CollegeBoard through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Must achieve a passing grade of 50 or higher on a CLEP exam  Inability to achieve a satisfactory grade on the first attempt to challenge will require the student to enroll in the course.  The following is the list of the challenge examinations acceptable for transfer:

College Composition - a score of 50 - 74 will receive credit for English Composition I. A score of 75 or higher will receive credit for English Composition II.

EVALUATION OF TRANSFER CREDIT

Prior to acceptance to the School of Nursing:

• The Admission-Recruiter reviews official transcripts for acceptable transfer credits.
• The applicant is informed of the courses that will be credited from outside institutions.
• The applicant is given the option to agree or disagree with the Admission-Recruiter’s decision.
• If the candidate agrees, the transfer courses are entered on the Official Notification of Transfer Credit form.
• If the candidate disagrees and believes more course work should be credited, it is the candidate’s responsibility to supply a course description for the syllabus for the credits in dispute.
• The Admissions Committee will review the course syllabus.
• The candidate receives written notification of the decision by the Office of Admissions.

RE-APPLICATION

An applicant who has been rejected may reapply to the school once.  A period of one year from the time of the initial application to the time of reapplication is required.  A new application must be submitted with the appropriate fee.  The  admission policies and procedures in effect at the time of submission will apply.

Dismissed students are not eligible to re-apply.
